At a time when collaborative robot applications are being introduced at a rapid pace, we need efficient ways to develop their interfaces with people. Used strategically, expressive motion has the power to increase robot acceptance, improve human-robot coordination, and perhaps even make robotic systems more enjoyable. By adapting strategies from theatre, Heathers research improves the ability of non-anthropomorphic robots to effectively layer nonverbal behaviours on their task actions, and interact with us successfully & charismatically.
Social Roboticist: Heather Knight
Heather Knight is a PhD candidate at Carnegie Mellon University and an alumnus from the Personal Robots Group at the MIT Media Lab. Her current research involves human-robot interaction, non-verbal machine communications and non-anthropomorphic social robots. She’s also the founder of Marilyn Monrobot and the annual Robot Film Festival. In 2011, she was included in the Forbes List for 30 under 30 in Science.

How can video blogging be used as a vehicle for social change? Myles Dyer first dipped his toe into YouTube in 2006, and has spent a decade exploring its potential to shape and inspire communities. He has created videos on a range of subjects including education, wellbeing, activism, politics and entertainment, earning over 10 million views and close to 50,000 subscribers.
Myles profile has enabled him to work with organisations such as UNICEF, the Guardian and the BBC, and launch his projects such as the 24-hour non-stop live broadcast fundraiser known as Stickaid. He creates subscription-funded weekly videos on YouTube and Facebook, while also offering consultancy around video strategy.
